Description

The vineyards are grouped around the village of Vosne-Romanée on well-drained soils, facing east and south-east. The soil is rich in iron and limestone on a base of rock and marl, the vines are located 240 meters above sea level. The average age of the vines is very high – around 44 years – and the vineyards are cultivated using organic methods.

Horses were reintroduced to cultivate the vineyards of Romanée-Conti and Le Montrachet, in order to avoid compaction of the soil with the use of tractors. Yields are very low, averaging 25 hl/ha (the yield of a Grand Cru is usually 35 hl/ha). In other words, it takes three vines to produce a bottle of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Yields are reduced by pruning early in the season, and green pruning in July and August. A cleaning is also carried out immediately before harvest to eliminate substandard bunches. At harvest time, the bunches are sorted into small baskets to be examined individually.
